Hello! My name is Brooke McKelvey and I am a senior Cinema and Media Studies major and double European Studies and Digital Arts and Humanities minor at Carleton College. My work centers around the visual, and is predominantly rooted in videography. Since being introduced to the field of DGAH, I have developed an interest in using digital storytelling for historical and cultural preservation.
I discovered DGAH during my sophomore year at Carleton. I had always thought of myself as a student grounded in humanities, but I decided to take an introductory DGAH course that explored the intersection between the digital, the technical, and the traditional. I soon realized that working with data did not just mean running equations off of spreadsheets. Instead, the field of DGAH represents a larger, interdisciplinary network of research, publications, and programs. I learn best visually, so I was immediately drawn to the programs that make the presentation of data and textual documents or histories more accessible without the need of a strong coding background. Since my first DGAH course, I have begun to blend my filmmaking with my DGAH work, capitalizing on community engagement courses that provide opportunities to collaborate with outside organizations. I hope that I can build off of these relationships as I continue to develop my filmmaking style and eventually make films that benefit communities around the world.
