Skills

I have worked on a variety of DGAH projects during my time at Carleton, most of which are housed here, in my portfolio. Unfortunately, I have also lost some projects to the ever-expanding abyss of the Internet. Though I do not have access to these projects anymore, they taught me skills that led to the creation of some of my more recent DGAH work, and I believe that these skills should have a place in my portfolio.

  • Adobe Creative Cloud
    • Adobe Creative Cloud is the software that I am most comfortable using, specifically Premiere Pro. Premiere allows me to deconstruct my temporally linked footage and edit it into new structures. I can experiment with multiple timelines, ultimately gaining digital control over the story being told.
  • ArcGIS
    • I learned how to use ArcGIS in my introductory DGAH course and it has been the program that I have used the most since then. I rely on ArcGIS to visually present otherwise intimidating datasets, using geographic references to position audiences within my work.
  • Network building
    • The final project for my introductory DGAH course was a network featuring the distribution of co-taught classes at Carleton. We used Gephi to create the final network and this experience was one of my first experiences that involved both pulling and analyzing a large quantity of data from the same dataset.
  • Omeka
    • Omeka is an open-source platform that allows for the curation of digital collections. I have used Omeka in multiple classes across multiple disciplines to increase the accessibility of historical information and documents.
  • Python
    • I took an introductory computer science course which taught me the basics of Python. I did not have any coding experience prior to this point, so this course opened my eyes to the relationship between backend programming and the visual interfaces that I was more familiar with.
  • SketchUp
    • SketchUp is a 3D modeling program that I was introduced to through DGAH. I have only used it a few times, but it has been the closest experience I have had to creating three-dimensional work.
  • TimelineJS
    • TimelineJS is an online tool that allows creators to build interactive timelines. I have used TimelineJS to present journalistic information in publications, as well as organize historical information in academic settings.
  • WordPress
    • I have extensive experience using WordPress to build various websites. These websites have been personal, academic, and professional, and I have learned to adapt my approach to each structure and design to reflect the site’s purpose.
